Where to stay in Marsa Alam: areas, not one town
A hotel advertised as "Marsa Alam" does not have to be in the main town. The name is used for a coastal strip of about 100 km, and resorts, camps and dive centres are spread north and south of the town. The same name can therefore mean a 10-minute transfer from the airport or a much longer ride. Always check the bay and the location of a property, not only the region.
The place you stay also sets which excursions are easy. If you plan reef days and boat trips, pick a base near the harbour or bay you want to use, and compare it with the Marsa Alam excursions you have in mind. The area you choose matters more than the star rating.

Resort areas along the coast
Three ways to think about where you sleep.
Port Ghalib and the area around the airport
Port Ghalib is a marina and resort area right next to the airport. The transfer takes about 10 to 20 minutes depending on the property. The area has a corniche and places to eat and shop, which suits a short transfer after a flight.
Port Ghalib โAround Marsa Alam town and the coast to the south
Camps, resorts and dive centres line the coast on both sides of the town. The distance to the airport grows the further you go. Ask for the transfer time to your exact property, because the name of the region does not tell you.
Marsa Alam airport โTowards Wadi el Gemal and Hamata
The southern coast leads to the national park with mangroves, islands and desert. It is a base for nature and for boat trips to the islands. Allow more travel time from the airport.
Wadi el Gemal โEl Quseir to the north
El Quseir is an old port town, about 75 km north of Port Ghalib. Some visitors stay there for the old town and the fort, and use it as a base for day trips down the coast.

Marsa Alam all inclusive: what it can mean
Meal plans differ by property.
Not every property sells all inclusive. Some camps sell full board and include selected drinks. That is a different model from an all inclusive package, so check what is in the price: meals and which drinks are included.
Beach camps in summer 2026 (1 May to 31 October) cost roughly EUR 74 to 106 per person and night in double occupancy, from a tent to a deluxe chalet in the high season, with full board and defined drinks. An environment fee of around EUR 5 per person and stay comes on top. Many camps let young children stay free in their parents' room and give a discount for older children, but ages and rates differ by property. Check the current price when you book.
When you compare offers, make sure the price is per person and not per room, and ask for the total including fees.
House reef and beach access: questions for your hotel
Many visitors choose Marsa Alam for the reef, but a hotel does not always have a reef you can use at any time. A house reef can have a sandy entry, a pier or a reef edge, and the conditions change with wind and tide. Ask where the entry is, whether it can be used on all days and whether corals start at the shoreline.
Hotel beaches belong to the property, so ask whether visitors who are not guests may use them. If you want a day at an organised beach instead, the page on Marsa Alam beaches explains your options.

What to ask before you book
Seven questions that save trouble.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| In which bay is the property? | The region name does not show the distance or the beach |
| How long is the transfer from the airport? | It can range from about 10 minutes to much longer |
| Is it all inclusive or full board? | Meal plans and included drinks differ |
| Is the price per person or per room? | Group prices are not per-person prices |
| Are there extra fees, such as an environment fee? | It can add to the total |
| How do you enter the water? | Sandy entry, pier or reef edge |
| What are the child ages and discounts? | They differ by property |
For most visitors who want easy days, a base near Port Ghalib is the simplest choice. For nature, look south towards Hamata.

Marsa Alam hotels: frequently asked questions
Which area should I stay in at Marsa Alam?
That depends on your plans. Port Ghalib has the shortest transfer from the airport. The south suits nature, and El Quseir suits old-town visits. Check the bay and the transfer time of each property.
Are all Marsa Alam hotels all inclusive?
No. Meal plans differ. Some camps sell full board with selected drinks instead. Check what the price covers.
How far is the airport from my hotel?
It depends on the property. Port Ghalib is about 10 to 20 minutes away. Resorts further south or in the town take longer, so ask for the transfer time to the exact address.
Does every hotel have a house reef?
Do not assume so. Ask whether the property has its own reef, how you enter the water and whether the entry can be used every day.
Can I walk from the hotel to restaurants and shops?
Do not assume it. The resorts are spread along the coast, so ask about the surroundings of the property. Port Ghalib has a corniche with places to eat and shop.
